Living in Peters Township, PA: What Home Buyers Should Know

By Melissa Woods - September 03, 2026

If you’re thinking about moving to Peters Township, Pennsylvania, you’ll find a popular South Hills community with a mix of established neighborhoods, newer developments, parks, recreation and convenient access to surrounding areas.

As a Realtor working throughout Pittsburgh and the South Hills, I help buyers compare communities based on more than just the house itself. Location, housing style, lot size, condition, commute, neighborhood feel and long-term value can all play a role in deciding whether Peters Township is the right fit.

Where Is Peters Township?

Peters Township is located in Washington County, just south of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair.

Many homes in the township use McMurray or Venetia mailing addresses, which can sometimes be confusing for buyers searching online.

Even though the mailing address may say McMurray or Venetia, the property can still be located within Peters Township.

What Types of Homes Will You Find?

Peters Township offers a wide variety of housing.

Depending on the neighborhood and price range, buyers may find:

  • Traditional two-story homes
  • Larger single-family homes
  • Newer subdivisions
  • Townhomes
  • Luxury properties
  • Custom-built homes
  • Homes on larger lots
  • Established older neighborhoods

That variety gives buyers options, but it also means home prices and neighborhood feel can vary considerably from one area to another.

Newer Construction and Established Neighborhoods

One thing buyers often notice about Peters Township is the mix of newer construction and established homes.

Some neighborhoods offer newer homes with modern layouts, open kitchens and updated finishes.

Other areas have mature trees, larger lots and homes built decades earlier.

Neither option is automatically better. It depends on whether you prefer newer features or a more established neighborhood setting.

Parks and Recreation

Peters Township offers parks, trails, athletic facilities and recreation programs throughout the community.

For buyers who enjoy outdoor activities, proximity to parks and recreation can be an important part of choosing a neighborhood.

When comparing homes, I recommend looking at not only the house but also what amenities are nearby and how often you would actually use them.

Shopping and Everyday Convenience

Peters Township provides convenient access to shopping, restaurants, medical offices, grocery stores and services throughout the McMurray area and surrounding South Hills communities.

Buyers also have access to nearby commercial areas in Washington County and Upper St. Clair.

What Should Buyers Pay Attention To?

When purchasing a home in Peters Township, buyers should consider:

  • Property taxes
  • Lot size
  • Neighborhood restrictions
  • Homeowners association fees, if applicable
  • Age of major systems
  • Roof condition
  • Drainage and grading
  • Home updates
  • Commute
  • Resale potential

For newer subdivisions, buyers should also review any HOA documents and community rules carefully.

McMurray vs. Venetia

One of the most common questions buyers have is the difference between McMurray and Venetia.

These are mailing areas, and both can include properties located within Peters Township.

That means buyers should verify the municipality and school district rather than relying only on the mailing city shown in an online listing.

We’ll cover this in more detail in a separate article because it can be confusing when you're first searching.

Melissa’s Local Perspective

One of the things I like about Peters Township is the variety of housing options.

A buyer looking for a newer subdivision may find something very different from someone who wants an established home on a larger lot.

That is why I recommend touring several neighborhoods before narrowing your search.

The right part of Peters Township depends on your budget, preferred home style and what matters most to you.

Is Peters Township Right for You?

Peters Township may be worth considering if you’re looking for:

  • A South Hills location
  • A variety of home styles
  • Newer construction options
  • Larger homes and lots in some areas
  • Parks and recreation
  • Convenient shopping
  • Access to Pittsburgh and Washington County

The right community is ultimately the one that best fits your lifestyle and goals.

Thinking About Buying in Peters Township?

If you're considering buying or selling a home in Peters Township, McMurray or Venetia, I’d be happy to help you understand the area and compare your options.
