Is Peters Township, PA a Good Place to Live?

By Melissa Woods - September 05, 2026

If you’re thinking about moving to Pittsburgh’s South Hills, Peters Township is often one of the communities buyers consider.

It offers a mix of established neighborhoods, newer construction, parks and recreation, convenient shopping, and access to both Pittsburgh and Washington County.

As a Realtor working throughout Pittsburgh and the South Hills, I help buyers look at more than just the house itself. The neighborhood, commute, housing style, taxes, lot size, convenience and long-term value all matter when deciding whether a community is the right fit.

Where Is Peters Township?

Peters Township is located in Washington County, just south of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair.

Many homes in Peters Township use McMurray or Venetia mailing addresses, which can sometimes confuse buyers who are searching online.

That is why it is important to verify the actual municipality and school district for a property rather than relying only on the mailing city.

What Is the Housing Like?

Peters Township offers a wide variety of homes.

Depending on the neighborhood and price range, buyers may find:

  • Traditional two-story homes
  • Newer construction
  • Townhomes
  • Luxury homes
  • Custom-built homes
  • Established older homes
  • Homes on larger lots

That variety gives buyers more options, but it also means one neighborhood can feel very different from another.

Newer Construction and Established Neighborhoods

One thing that stands out about Peters Township is the mix of newer developments and established neighborhoods.

Some buyers prefer newer homes with open floor plans, modern finishes and newer mechanical systems.

Others prefer mature neighborhoods with larger trees, established landscaping and more traditional homes.

Both options can be found in the township.

Parks and Recreation

Peters Township offers parks, trails, recreation programs and athletic facilities.

For buyers who enjoy outdoor activities, this can be a big advantage.

When comparing homes, it can be helpful to look at how close a property is to the parks and recreation areas you would actually use.

Shopping and Everyday Convenience

Peters Township provides convenient access to grocery stores, restaurants, medical offices, shopping and everyday services throughout the McMurray area and surrounding South Hills communities.

It also offers easy access to commercial areas in Washington County.

That combination can be appealing to buyers who want suburban living without being far from daily necessities.

Commuting and Access

Peters Township is farther south than Bethel Park, so commute preferences can play a role in deciding whether it is the right location.

If you work in Pittsburgh, I recommend testing your actual commute from the neighborhood you are considering.

Travel time can vary depending on route, traffic and time of day.

What Should Buyers Consider?

Before choosing a home in Peters Township, think about:

  • Your commute
  • Property taxes
  • Preferred home style
  • Lot size
  • HOA fees, if applicable
  • Neighborhood restrictions
  • Home condition
  • Newer construction vs. established home
  • Proximity to shopping and recreation
  • Long-term resale potential

The right community is the one that works best for your own priorities.

Melissa’s Local Perspective

One of the things I like about Peters Township is the variety.

A buyer looking for a newer home in a planned subdivision may find something completely different from someone searching for an established home on a larger lot.

That is why I recommend touring several neighborhoods before narrowing your search.

The best fit often becomes much clearer once you see the different areas in person.

Is Peters Township Right for You?

Peters Township may be worth considering if you’re looking for:

  • A popular South Hills location
  • Newer construction options
  • Established neighborhoods
  • Larger homes and lots in some areas
  • Parks and recreation
  • Convenient shopping
  • Access to Pittsburgh and Washington County

No community is perfect for everyone, but Peters Township offers a strong mix of housing, location and amenities that makes it appealing to many buyers.

Thinking About Moving to Peters Township?

If you're considering buying or selling a home in Peters Township, McMurray or Venetia, I’d be happy to help you explore the area and understand the local market.
